What Is Desert Safari Dubai?

Desert Safari Dubai is an exciting adventure that takes visitors on a journey through the stunning desert landscape located right outside the city of Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates.

The safari typically involves a thrilling ride through the sand dunes in a 4×4 vehicle, known as “dune bashing”, which is a highlight of the experience.

Other activities that can be enjoyed during the Desert Safari Dubai include sandboarding (this activity wasn’t available during our safari), camel riding, and quad biking (or an ATV).

All of these activities provide an adrenaline-fueled experience in the heart of the desert.

Additionally, visitors can immerse themselves in traditional Emirati culture by enjoying live music and dance performances, henna painting, and experiencing a delicious buffet dinner under the stars.

The Desert Safari Dubai is a popular excursion for visitors seeking a unique and unforgettable experience in the UAE.

It is a must-try for those who want to explore the beauty of the desert.

Dubai Desert Safari

Let’s delve into our experience doing a Dubai Desert Safari.

Pick up & traveling to the camp

The majority of Desert Safari Trips start in the evening.

Our trip began with a pick-up at 3 pm from Safir Mall, which is situated quite far from downtown Dubai but it was close to where we were staying.

It took around an hour and a half of driving from Safir Mall to reach the safari camp, which was situated between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

There are numerous camps throughout the desert landscape.

Dune bashing

Upon arrival at the camp, we had to wait for the 4X4 jeep driver to join us.

Once the driver arrived, we quickly got into the jeep and headed out for some sand dune bashing.

The experience did not take us too far from the camp, so there was no need to worry about traveling any further.

Despite my concerns about getting motion sickness, I felt perfectly fine throughout the ride.

🎥 If you want to see my experience with sand dune bashing, check out the two videos below:

Sand Dune Bashing Part 2

It was exhilarating and felt like being on a roller coaster as we navigated the high dunes.

However, I felt completely safe throughout the whole experience.

It never once felt like the car was in danger of toppling over or crashing into the dunes.

Overall, it was a unique and unforgettable adventure, and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Other activities to do at the Dubai Desert Safari

After the sand dune bashing adventure, we were told to remain at the camp where a variety of activities were available.

A man with a falcon, camels, and a small shop selling water, scarves, and most importantly a bathroom were all located there.

Furthermore, there was an area where visitors could pay extra to rent an ATV (quad bike) and drive it around a designated flat area (not in the dunes).

Also, the visitors were permitted to wander around and capture photos of the stunning desert landscape.

As an animal lover, I couldn’t resist the chance to interact with the falcon.

Therefore, I paid an additional fee of 10 dirhams to hold and pet it.

If you’re interested in a Dubai Desert Safari camel ride, there’s an area in the camp offering short, free rides.

However, if you desire a longer ride, additional fees are charged.

Keep in mind that camels are much taller than horses, but move slowly and calmly.

However, when they stand up or sit down, they do so abruptly, so it is crucial to grip the saddle tightly to avoid falling off.

The camel handler would walk alongside the camel, providing instructions and ensuring the safety of the riders.

We decided not to participate in the camel rides as we were concerned about the exploitation of the animals.

Therefore, I do not recommend riding them when you go.

In the evening

When it started getting darker, we made our way to a different area of the camp to enjoy dinner and a show.

It is fenced in, but there is no roof so you can see the stars.

Also, in there, you have the chance to get a henna tattoo.

The safari price includes a small design, but if you prefer a larger one, an additional fee is required.

For those seeking a more dazzling look, there was even an option for a sparkling henna tattoo. How exciting is that!!!

In addition to the henna tattoos, there was a small marketplace where you could purchase souvenirs and clothing.

Furthermore, a fruit juice stand was available if you were craving some freshly squeezed juice.

Also, this is where you would find the shishas (if you are interested in smoking).

It’s essential to bring cash to the Desert Safari, as some items are not included in the package.

The dinner and show

We discovered a cozy area to settle down and prepare for the upcoming dinner and show.

There were these low long tables, and instead of a chair, you sat on a pillow.

Once it got dark, the show started. The performance included a belly dancer, a spinning dervish, and an impressive flame dancer.

The entertainers were all exceptional, particularly the dervish (never seen anything like this before).

🎥 Check out this video: Flame Dancer Show in Dubai Desert

Halfway through the show, we had a buffet dinner.

The buffet offered a wide variety of options, with most of them being delicious traditional dishes.

Also, there were vegetarian options (my friend is vegetarian and she was happy with the food).

For beverages, there were choices of water, Fanta Orange, Sprite, and Coke, but no diet or zero options were available.

Keep in mind that alcohol is not served or available.

After we finished eating and the show ended, we boarded the tour bus around 8.15 pm and returned to the mall where we had initially met.

The trip to and from the desert was long and tiring, with the heat leaving us exhausted.

It’s important to expect a long and hot afternoon.

What to wear to Dubai Desert Safari?

When going on a Dubai Desert Safari, it is important to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that will keep you cool in the hot and dry desert climate.

I would recommend wearing long pants and long sleeves to protect your skin from the sun and sand.

Loose, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen are ideal for this kind of weather.

Also, it is advisable to wear a hat or scarf to protect your head and face from the sun.

Bring a lightweight jacket or sweater as it can get cooler in the evening.

It is important to note that Dubai is a conservative city, so it’s best to avoid wearing revealing or tight clothing, especially for women.

Can I wear a dress to the Dubai Desert Safari?

I would not recommend wearing a dress to Dubai Desert Safari.

That is because a dress may not be suitable for the activities and terrain involved.

Also, wearing a dress may not provide adequate coverage and protection from the sand, sun, and wind.

If you still wish to wear a dress, it is advisable to choose a knee-length or longer dress that is loose-fitting and made of lightweight and breathable fabric.

Don’t forget that the dress has to cover your shoulders as well and not have too big of a cleavage.

How long is the Dubai Desert Safari?

The length of a Dubai Desert Safari can vary depending on the tour operator and the specific package you choose.

However, most Dubai Desert Safaris typically last for around 6 hours, including pickup and drop-off times.

They usually start in the late afternoon and end in the evening.

Is Dubai Desert Safari safe for infants?

It is generally not recommended to take infants on a Dubai Desert Safari, as the environment can be challenging for them.

The desert can be hot, dry, and dusty, which can be uncomfortable for young children.

In addition, the safari may involve bumpy rides on rough terrain.

That could be dangerous for infants who are not yet able to sit up or hold their heads steady.

If you do decide to take your infant on a Dubai Desert Safari, it’s important to take certain precautions to ensure their safety and comfort.

You should dress your baby in lightweight, breathable clothing, and bring plenty of water to keep them hydrated.

Also, bring sunscreen and a hat to protect their skin from the sun.
