Why did the British build Halifax Citadel?
The primary function of the Halifax Citadel was to defend Halifax from naval attacks and invasions.
Its strategic location on the hill provided commanding views of the harbor and the surrounding land, making it a vital military outpost.
The fort was heavily armed with cannons and could house hundreds of soldiers.
Though the citadel never faced a direct attack, its presence served as a powerful deterrent.
Also, it played an important role during major conflicts such as the Napoleonic Wars, the American Revolution, and the War of 1812.
In the 20th century, during World War I and World War II, the citadel was used as a signal station. As well as a hub for coordinating defense activities, including anti-aircraft defenses for Halifax.
The current version of the Halifax Citadel was completed in 1856.
The structure is made of stone and features thick, sloping walls that were designed to withstand cannon fire.
The interior of the citadel includes barracks, powder magazines, and storage areas, designed to accommodate the garrison of British soldiers stationed there.

No, the Halifax Citadel is not free.
The adult ticket is $13.25 CAD (June 1 – September 15) and $9.00 the rest of the time.
Today, visitors can explore reconstructed barracks and other areas to get a sense of what daily life was like for the garrison.
The Halifax Citadel was designated a National Historic Site in 1935, and today it is one of the most visited historical attractions in Halifax.
You can walk along the ramparts, where restored cannons and artillery pieces are on display.

Keep in mind that the citadel is huge, we spent 3 hours exploring all of it. Also, there is a gift shop and a small cafe where you can grab coffee and snacks.
6. Old Town Clock
The Old Town Clock, also known as the Halifax Town Clock or Citadel Clock, is one of Halifax’s most iconic landmarks.
Perched on the eastern slope of Citadel Hill, the clock has been a symbol of the city ever since it was commissioned in 1803 by Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, who was stationed in Halifax at the time.
The clock’s prominent position on the hill makes it visible from much of downtown Halifax.
It was intended to promote punctuality among the garrison stationed at the Halifax Citadel.
How old is the Halifax Town Clock?
The clock began operating on October 20, 1803 and has continuously kept time for over two centuries.
The Old Town Clock is housed in a Palladian-style building, a type of architecture known for its symmetry, classical lines, and elegance.
It consists of a three-tiered, octagonal tower that sits atop a white wooden base.
The building’s design is simple yet stately, reflecting the Georgian architectural style popular in Britain at the time of its construction.
The first level is a rectangular structure with windows and a central door, originally designed to serve as the caretaker’s residence.
Above the base is an octagonal second tier, which supports the clock mechanism and features four faces—one on each side of the tower.
These clock faces are large and easily visible from a distance, with Roman numerals indicating the hours.
The uppermost part of the structure consists of a smaller octagonal cupola, topped by a domed roof and a weather vane. This final tier houses the bells that chime the hours.

What to see along the Halifax Waterfront?
One of the things to check out is the Wave. This modern art sculpture by Donna Hiebert is a playful structure that visitors, especially children, often try to climb.
It’s one of the most recognizable and Instagram-worthy spots on the boardwalk.
The waterfront is dotted with various art installations, like the “Drunken Lampposts,” which are bent lamppost sculptures that make for fun photo opportunities.
