The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is an architectural masterpiece and is one of the world’s largest and most beautiful mosques.
This grand mosque is named after the United Arab Emirates’ founder and first President, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
It is renowned for its stunning architecture, with white marble domes adorned with intricate floral patterns and calligraphy.
Its grandeur is matched by its size and capacity, accommodating over 40,000 worshippers and visitors.
The mosque’s luxurious materials, including white marble, gold, semi-precious stones, and crystals, contribute to its majestic appearance.
When was the Sheikh Zayed Mosque built?
Construction of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque began in the late 20th century.

Beyond its religious significance, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a hub for cultural understanding, emphasizing tolerance, coexistence, and dialogue.
Visitors can explore its interior, grand prayer hall, and picturesque courtyard, as well as its library, and visitor center.
It is open to people of all nationalities and religions, symbolizing the UAE’s commitment to diversity and peaceful coexistence.
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque also referred to by many people as the White Mosque, is one of the most stunning buildings I have ever seen.
If you only have time to do one thing in Abu Dhabi, I strongly suggest you visit Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (the largest in the country).
Where is Sheikh Zayed Mosque located?
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is located in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates.
The exact location is Al Rawdah, Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Keep in mind, that Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is located pretty far from downtown which means you will need to drive there (about 11 mins drive) or book a tour.

What to expect during your visit
When you are looking for parking, make sure you park close to the Visitor Center.
There are signs to guide you to it, so don’t park your car in front of the Mosque and think you can get in from there.
All visitors must go through the Visitor Center which is connected with an underground tunnel to the Mosque itself.
It takes quite a while to get from one to the other. You have to go through airport-style security, and if needed be given an abaya (more on this later).
Expect roughly half an hour from parking your car to actually being inside of the Mosque.
This is one of the most popular attractions in the UAE so expect large crowds.
The Mosque is essentially divided into two sides, one side is dedicated only to people praying and the other side is for visitors.
So when you enter you need to go to the left side of the Mosque.
You are not allowed to go to the central courtyard, which is why in all pictures the courtyard is empty.
The central courtyard is used only for the Friday prayer and for holiday celebrations.
Visitors are to follow specifically outlined paths with frequent photo opportunity sections, where you can step into the courtyard and take pictures.
What is inside the Mosque?
Eventually, the path leads you inside the Mosque where you can see the Main Prayer Hall adorned with a stunning carpet and crystal chandeliers (7 in total).
The carpet is the world’s largest handwoven carpet, made from a blend of wool and cotton.
It is intricately designed with geometric patterns and floral motifs in hues of green and beige.
The remainder of the mosque is equally captivating. The columns flanking the structure and the adjacent reflective pool are truly awe-inspiring.
The white marble columns adorned with intricate floral patterns are unlike anything I’ve encountered previously.
Furthermore, the mosque looks stunning in the evening when it is bathed in a soothing blue illumination.
When you are done with your visit you have to go back through the underground tunnel back to the Visitor Centre, return your abaya if you borrowed one and exit to the parking lot.
In addition, they have a large gift shop with a lot of interesting items.
What is special about the Sheikh Zayed Mosque?
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is truly exceptional, primarily due to its stunning architectural grandeur.
It is one of the world’s largest and most famous mosques.
Beyond its architectural splendor, the mosque is a symbol of cultural exchange and interfaith understanding, emphasizing the values of tolerance and coexistence.
Also, it welcomes people of all nationalities and religions.
Does Sheikh Zayed Mosque have parking?
Yes, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque has parking facilities for visitors.
You’ll find a dedicated parking area that can hold a considerable number of vehicles, and the parking is free of charge for mosque visitors.
Is Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque free to visit?
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is open to visitors free of charge and everyone is welcome.
What is the dress code in Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque?
Don’t forget that there is a dress code in effect at the Mosque.
You must wear long, loose-fitting clothes for both men and women.
You will need to cover your arms and legs. If the clothes you wear are not appropriate, they will lend you an abaya (so don’t worry, they’ve got you covered (pun intended)).
The Sheikh Zayed Mosque abaya rental is located in the Visitors Center.
The mosque’s dress code for females is that all women must cover their hair (the abaya they provide has a hood, so you don’t have to bring a headscarf with you).
There is security everywhere and they seem pretty strict, especially when it comes to the headscarves so please follow the rules or they will ask you to leave.
Don’t forget that this is a place of worship and it’s extremely important to respect that – don’t make a lot of noise or say or do anything offensive or inappropriate.
Is Sheikh Zayed Mosque open for tourists?
Yes, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is open to tourists.
It is not only a place of worship but also a significant tourist attraction.
Visitors from around the world are welcome to explore the mosque’s stunning architecture, learn about its cultural and historical significance, and admire its artistic and architectural features.
What is the best time to visit the Grand Mosque?
Many choose to explore in the morning when the mosque opens, benefiting from the soft morning light and fewer crowds.
Late afternoon and early evening can also be an excellent choice, as the mosque is beautifully illuminated after sunset, offering a different ambiance.
Weekdays are generally less crowded than weekends, and the cooler months, from November to March, are ideal for avoiding the scorching summer heat.
Be mindful of the mosque’s prayer times, and check for special events or exhibitions that might enhance your visit.
Personally, I would recommend going early in the morning to avoid as much of the heat as you can.
We were there around 10:30 AM in March and it was already extremely hot.
Don’t forget to drink a lot of water!!!

What are the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Abu Dhabi opening hours?

Is Sheikh Zayed Mosque open on Fridays?
Yes, Sheikh Zayed Mosque is open on Fridays for tourists from 4:30 PM to 10 PM.
How much time do you need for the Grand Mosque Abu Dhabi?
For a brief visit to capture the mosque’s external beauty and serene courtyard, an hour to an hour and a half should suffice.
However, for a more immersive exploration, including the interior, and the gardens, plan on dedicating around 2 hours.
Opting for a guided tour can provide an even richer understanding of the mosque’s history and significance, extending your visit to about 2 and a half hours.
As I said earlier, only half of the building is open to visitors (the other side is for prayers only).
Therefore, you probably won’t need more than an hour and a half to see everything (without a tour).
