Yes! Fargo is worth visiting if you’re looking for a small prairie town with a mix of history, culture, interesting attractions, and good food.
While it might not be the first place that comes to mind when planning a trip to the United States, Fargo has plenty to offer beyond its famous movie connection.

Also, it is a great starting point for exploring other parts of North Dakota, including Minot, Williston and Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

It sits on the western bank of the Red River of the North, directly across from Moorhead, Minnesota.
Together, Fargo and Moorhead form part of the Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan area.
Fargo is the largest city in North Dakota and is approximately 3.5 hours northwest of Minneapolis by car.
It is about 4 hours from Bismarck, the state capital.
If you’re flying into the area, Hector International Airport (FAR) is located just a few minutes from downtown Fargo, making it relatively easy to get to the city.

What Is The Best Time To Visit Fargo?
The best time to visit Fargo, North Dakota, is generally between May and September.
That is when the temperatures are warmer, and you can comfortably explore the city and its outdoor attractions.
Summer (June to August) is the warmest time of year, with average daytime temperatures ranging from 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
It’s a great time to enjoy outdoor activities, explore downtown Fargo, and take advantage of seasonal events and festivals.

5 Things To Do In Fargo, North Dakota
Let’s take a look at some of the best things to do in Fargo, North Dakota.
1. See Downtown Fargo and the Fargo Theatre
One of the best ways to get to know Fargo is by spending some time exploring its downtown area.
Downtown Fargo has a charming mix of historic architecture, independent boutiques, local coffee shops, restaurants, breweries, and colourful murals.
The heart of downtown is Broadway, one of the city’s main streets, where you can find most of the things I mention in this blog post.
One of the main landmarks you shouldn’t miss is the Fargo Theatre.
The Fargo Theatre is a historic movie theatre that celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2026!
The building is known for its beautiful Art Deco architecture, vintage details, and iconic vertical neon sign that spells out FARGO.
The illuminated marquee is particularly eye-catching and has become one of the most photographed spots in the city.

It originally opened as a cinema and vaudeville house, and today it continues to operate as an entertainment venue.
It hosts independent and classic movie screenings, concerts, live performances, and special events.
Even if you don’t have time to watch a movie or attend a show, it’s worth stopping by to admire the exterior and take a few pictures.
If you have extra time, check out the theatre’s schedule to see what’s playing.
We watched the Fargo movie at the Fargo Theatre in Fargo lol!
Experiencing a film or performance inside this nearly century-old venue would be a fun addition to your Fargo visit.
I would recommend setting aside at least a couple of hours to explore downtown.
As there are plenty of little shops, restaurants, and interesting corners to discover along the way.

2. Explore the Hjemkomst Museum
One of the most interesting attractions in the Fargo-Moorhead area is the Hjemkomst Museum.
It is located in neighbouring Moorhead, Minnesota, just across the Red River from Fargo.
The museum celebrates the area’s Scandinavian heritage and local history.
The name Hjemkomst is Norwegian for “homecoming.”
It is particularly famous for two impressive attractions: a full-size Viking ship and a traditional Norwegian stave church replica.
The Hjemkomst Viking Ship was built by Moorhead resident Robert Asp, who dreamed of sailing a Viking ship to Norway to honour his Norwegian heritage.
After his passing in 1980, his family completed his dream and sailed the ship from Minnesota to Norway in 1982.
Today, the ship is on display at the museum, where visitors can learn about its fascinating journey.

Another highlight is the Hopperstad Stave Church, located outside the museum in Viking Ship Park.
This is a full-scale replica of a medieval Norwegian stave church originally built in Vik, Norway, and dating back to the 12th century.
The wooden structure is incredibly detailed, featuring traditional Scandinavian architecture, intricate wood carvings, and beautiful craftsmanship.
You can admire the church from the outside, but if you’d like to see the interior, guided tours are available seasonally.
I highly recommend seeing the inside of the church – it is all carved from wood.
Beyond the Viking ship and church, the museum also has exhibits featuring local history, art, and cultural displays.

3. Spend Some Time at Brewhalla
Brewhalla is one of the coolest places to visit in Fargo, especially if you enjoy food, drinks, shopping, and discovering local businesses.
It is located in a beautifully renovated historic building. This multi-level marketplace brings together a variety of independent vendors, restaurants, bars, and specialty shops under one roof.
The building has a fun, industrial feel, with plenty of seating areas and interesting spaces to explore.
You can wander around and browse everything from handmade goods and clothing to local food products, home decor, and unique gifts.
Also, there are several food vendors offering different cuisines, making it a great place to grab lunch or dinner while exploring.

One of the highlights of Brewhalla is its connection to Drekker Brewing Company, a popular Fargo-based craft brewery.
You can stop by for a locally brewed beer, enjoy the lively atmosphere, and check out the different spaces throughout the building.
What makes Brewhalla particularly interesting is that it’s more than just a food hall.
It brings together shopping, dining, entertainment, and social spaces, making it a popular gathering spot for both locals and visitors.
There is even a hotel on the top levels, which is really cool!
Depending on when you visit, you might also come across live entertainment, special events, or seasonal activities.
I would recommend visiting around lunchtime or in the early evening so you can sample some of the food, browse the shops, and enjoy a drink.

If you’re looking for somewhere to enjoy a drink while exploring Fargo, make sure to stop by Wild Terra.
Located in downtown Fargo, Wild Terra is a local cidery and taproom specializing in handcrafted hard ciders made with apples.
They offer a variety of flavours, ranging from traditional apple cider to more creative seasonal options, so there’s usually something interesting to try.
I had the pumpkin spice cider, and it was surprisingly good! Also, I tried The Perry, which has a pear and vanilla flavor.
Keep in mind that their menu changes weekly, so the drinks available will always be different.

I’d recommend ordering a cider flight so you can sample a few different flavours and find your favourite!
The taproom has a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, with a rustic-industrial design, plenty of seating, and a fun space to unwind after a day of sightseeing.
One of the things I liked about the space is that it feels casual and unpretentious, making it easy to pop in for a quick drink.
Also, Wild Terra hosts different events throughout the year, including trivia nights, live entertainment, and other community gatherings.

5. Visit the Dilly Bar Dairy Queen
If you’re a fan of Dairy Queen, there’s a fun little stop to add to your Fargo itinerary!
The Dilly Bar is one of Dairy Queen’s classic treats, consisting of soft-serve ice cream dipped in a chocolate coating, and it’s been a popular menu item since 1955.
The treat was invented in 1955 by the owners of a Dairy Queen in Moorhead, Minnesota, just across the river from Fargo.
It’s a fun nod to a nostalgic American ice cream favourite and makes for a quirky photo opportunity.
What makes this location particularly interesting is its connection to the history of the Dilly Bar.

It quickly became a popular menu item and is now one of the brand’s most recognizable treats.
So, while you’re in the Fargo-Moorhead area, it’s a fun way to discover a little piece of Dairy Queen history.
Of course, you can also stop inside to grab a Dilly Bar or another Dairy Queen treat.
Whether you go for a Blizzard, a dipped cone, or the iconic Dilly Bar, it’s a fun little stop for anyone with a sweet tooth.
It’s not necessarily a major sightseeing attraction, but it’s one of those quirky stops that adds a bit of local history and nostalgia to your trip.
