Places To Visit In Canada In December – Ontario

First, let’s take a look at some of the places to visit in Ontario in December.

1. Toronto

By Julie From Toronto 2 Anywhere

Toronto is incredible to visit in December, especially if you love festive holiday activities and outdoor fun like ice skating!

Skating in the city is a winter highlight, and with dozens of outdoor ice rinks in Toronto to choose from, there’s no better place to experience it than at Nathan Phillips Square.

This iconic rink, located right in front of the famous Toronto Sign in downtown Toronto, is a favourite for both locals and visitors.

It’s free to use, and skate rentals are available if you don’t have your own.

During December, the square is transformed with holiday lights and a large Christmas tree.

It’s easy to spend an hour or so here before heading to nearby attractions like the CN Tower or Casa Loma’s Christmas at the Castle.

Getting to the rink is simple—it’s a quick walk from Queen Subway Station.

Feeling cold after skating? Grab a hot chocolate from Tim Hortons right across the street.

If you’re hungry, I recommend Queen’s Head Pub for great food at a great price, just a few minutes away.

For a convenient place to stay, check out the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel.

It’s literally across the street, so you can skate, swim in their rooftop indoor/outdoor pool, and relax—all without going far.

Its central downtown location makes it an ideal place to stay in Toronto with convenient access to Toronto’s main attractions.

December in Toronto is packed with lots of fun winter activities, and skating at Nathan Phillips Square should be at the top of your list!

2. Niagara Falls

By Sarah From Navigating Niagara

Niagara Falls in December is a magical mix of natural beauty and holiday charm!

With fewer crowds, sparkling holiday lights, and clear views of the Falls, it’s the perfect time for a winter escape.

Visiting Niagara Falls in the winter– and December in particular – offers the perfect chance to experience the Winter Festival of Lights.

Where an 8 km stretch of the Niagara Parkway and Dufferin Islands dazzle with millions of twinkling lights.

Warm up with a stop along the Hot Chocolate Trail to stay cozy while you explore.

Bundle up and head to the brink of the Falls for breathtaking icy views, or enjoy the scenery from the warmth of the Skylon Tower.

The best bang for your buck is visiting the Niagara Parks Power Station at night – where the Tunnel is lit up with colourful LED lights.

Also, you can experience the Falls Illumination, followed by the immersive Currents Light Show.

A weekend stay (~2 nights) in Niagara Falls is plenty to enjoy the highlights.

Stay at Embassy Suites Fallsview, where you can wake up to incredible Falls views right from your room and catch the fireworks display throughout the Winter Festival of Lights.

Treat yourself to a meal with a view at Table Rock House Restaurant overlooking the Horseshoe Falls.

You can drive from nearby cities like Toronto or Buffalo, or take the GO Train (your ticket can be bundled with WEGO transportation while you’re in the Falls!) or bus to the heart of Niagara Falls.

7. Whistler

By Chanelle From Chasing Chanelle

For a memorable winter escape with world-class skiing, Whistler is Canada’s best place to visit in December.

Just a two-hour drive north of Vancouver, Whistler is easy to reach by flying into Vancouver and taking a shuttle to the resort.

Whistler is especially magical during December.

The village feels like a real-life snow globe, decked out in 350,000 twinkling Christmas lights, and covered in fresh snow for a true winter wonderland.

Plus, if you visit earlier in the month before the holiday rush, you’ll find some of the best deals on skiing and snowboarding all season long.

As Canada’s top ski resort, skiing and snowboarding are, of course, the main attractions.

But there’s plenty more to do if you’re not hitting the slopes—snowshoeing, tubing, snowmobiling, and spending a day at the Scandinave Spa are all fantastic December activities.

And when the day winds down, après ski is a must.

Be sure to check out some of Whistler’s iconic bars, including the Longhorn Saloon, Garibaldi Lift Co., and Merlin’s, for live music, great vibes, and delicious food and drinks.

Plan to spend at least five days here to make the most of everything, and stay right in the Village for the best access to the slopes and all the action.

The Pan Pacific Whistler Mountainside and Westin Resort & Spa are fantastic options for ski-in/ski-out accommodation.

Although, make sure to book early to get the best deals, especially on ski passes, as they’re extremely pricey to buy at the window.

Places To Visit In Canada In December – Quebec

In this section, you will find out what are the best places to check out in Quebec.

8. Montreal

By Shireen From The Happy Days Travels

Canada during December is a bucket-list destination, especially the ski resorts like Banff and Whistler but for something unique, look further East and visit the dreamy city of Montreal in Quebec.

If flying, you’ll probably land at Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport which has direct train lines to the city.

Also, Uber is available if you prefer to directly get to your hotel.

Montreal is a city that many road-trippers visit along with other Canadian places in the East like Toronto and Quebec City.

During December, Montreal turns into an enchanting land with snow covering its gothic buildings and winter-based things to do.

View of Montreal, Quebec, Canadian city, large city

Such as seeing the frozen river, experiencing Christmas in the park, exploring the Christmas Village, and ice skating at the Natrel skating rink.

About 3 days is a good amount of time to spend in Montreal to ensure you incorporate the December-specific activities.

Don’t miss out on the usual Montreal things to do like hiking Mount Royal to get epic views of the city, walking through Old Montreal and eating the best foods of the province.

Montreal is one of the best foodie cities in Canada and major TV shows like Somebody Feed Phil with Phil Rosenthal and No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain were filmed here.

In addition, Montreal is the home of Poutine, the national dish of fries, cheese curds and gravy.

Don’t miss the other wonderful foods of Montreal like Pastel de Nata in Little Portugal, Schwartz deli for the best Montreal smoked meat sandwich and St-Viateur for a Montreal bagel.

9. Quebec City

By Carolin From Happy When Abroad

Quebec City is the ideal destination to visit during December as the city transforms into a magical winter wonderland during that time.

All over the city you can spot festive decorations and walk on cobblestone streets blanketed with snow.

There are many ways to get to Quebec City from all around the world. The best options are to fly into Jean Lesage International Airport or take a scenic train from Montreal.

When visiting Quebec City in December you can stroll through the pretty old district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and enjoy the European-style architecture.

A visit to Château Frontenac, the world’s most photographed hotel, is a must-do on your city trip.

If you’re looking for unique souvenirs, mulled wine, and delicious food, you should visit the iconic German-style Christmas Market at Place de l’Hôtel-de-Ville.

And don’t miss ice skating at Place D’Youville!

For a nature escape, head to Montmorency Falls Park, where the frozen waterfall creates a spectacular icy landscape.

I recommend staying for at least one day in Quebec City, but 2-4 days would be perfect to fully explore the city’s attractions.

Staying in Old Quebec is perfect for exploring all the main sights within walking distance.

If you’re looking for luxury boutique accommodation, Hotel Le Germain Quebec should be your number one choice.

Places To Visit In Canada In December – Alberta

Let’s take a look at some amazing places to visit in Alberta in December.

10. Banff

By Melanie From The World Travel Girl

I’ve always loved the Canadian Rockies, and Banff, Alberta is my favorite place to be in the winter.

The beautiful scenery is just a short 1.5-hour drive from Calgary.

The snow-capped mountains, the cozy lodges, and the festive atmosphere make it the perfect place to enjoy the winter season in December.

One of my favorite things to do in Banff in December is hiking.

I love the peace of the winter and the stunning views of the mountains.

Another favorite activity is soaking in the Banff Upper Hot Springs. There’s nothing better than relaxing in a warm pool of mineral water after a day of outdoor adventure.

I recommend staying at the Rimrock Resort Hotel, a luxurious hotel with stunning mountain views and a world-class spa.

View from Tunnel Mountain, Banff, mountain

For a unique dining experience, check out Grizzly House, one of my favorite places to eat.

This rustic restaurant offers delicious fondue with a tasty variety of meats and other specialties.

Be sure to dress warmly and in layers to stay comfortable in the chilly mountain weather.

Since December is a popular time for travelers, booking your accommodations and activities in advance is highly recommended.

If you’re planning to hike, always check trail conditions beforehand to ensure safety.

Additionally, driving in Banff during winter can be challenging due to icy roads and snow, so drive cautiously, take it slow, and be prepared for winter conditions.

By Tanya From The T Word on Travel

Are you looking for a truly Canadian experience this December? Why not fly into Edmonton Alberta; the City of Champions?

Edmonton is home to the world-famous Edmonton Oilers, so catching a game while you’re in the city is a must.

This city loves their team; the noise from the crowd reaches the highest decibels in the NHL.

Priding itself on being a “Festival City” Edmonton has more annual festivals than anywhere else in the country.

Multiple events happen every month of the year; with December being no exception.

Be sure to check out the YEG Christmas Market held in the River Valley for amazing holiday food, drink and performances.

Plan to spend 3-5 days exploring Edmonton.

Staying near Whyte Avenue in Old Strathcona will be your best bet for nightlife and a full range of entertainment options.

Jasper is absolutely magical in the winter.

With mountains covered in snow and frozen waterfalls, the place becomes an actual winter wonderland.

Not to mention, there are tons of great things to do in the winter.

Hitting the slopes at Marmot Basin is probably the most popular activity.

Outside of skiing, you can skate on one of the many frozen lakes, try snowshoeing, or experience the dramatic Maligne Canyon Ice Walk.

When it comes to dining, you’re in for a treat – Jasper has some fabulous restaurants.

15. Whitehorse

By Melanie From Postcards & Places

Visiting the Yukon in December is a truly magical experience, as Whitehorse transforms into a winter wonderland under a blanket of snow and twinkling lights.

With the potential to witness the awe-inspiring Northern Lights during those long nights, it’s an ideal destination for those seeking a remote winter adventure.

The peaceful, small-town atmosphere of the capital city, combined with activities like dog sledding, snowshoeing, and ice fishing.

Making December a unique time to connect with nature and experience the true spirit of The Great White North.

Plus, the cozy local culture, with warm cafés and traditional Yukon hospitality, offers a perfect retreat from the cold.

I stayed at Best Western Goldrush Inn and found it comfortable and clean.

To eat, I recommend Big Bear Eatery and Taphouse and Woodcutter’s Blanket Bar & Brewery, and Klondike Rib and Salmon is a Whitehorse institution.

In December, Whitehorse has an average high of only -10°C and a low of -17°C.

But do not be intimidated by the cold! Whitehorse’s downtown is quite small and walkable—just wear enough warm layers, and you’ll be fine.

Most visitors arrive in Whitehorse by air.

Direct flights from Vancouver are about 2.5 hours.

Flights from Toronto require a connection, usually Vancouver, Calgary, or Edmonton, and the entire journey usually takes between 8 to 10 hours.
