Granville Island is a vibrant peninsula located in the heart of Vancouver.
Despite its name, it’s not actually an island but a unique destination that offers a delightful mix of arts, culture, and culinary experiences.
Once an industrial area, Granville Island has been transformed into a lively hub where locals and visitors gather to enjoy an array of activities.
The island is home to the Granville Island Public Market, a beloved marketplace that showcases an incredible variety of fresh produce, gourmet foods, sweets, artisanal crafts, and more.
We got a fruit smoothie and I couldn’t resist buying some fresh cherries that we took to go with us.

Another thing to do in Granville Island is to check out the Giants Murals.
They are six tall silos that are painted to look like people (giants). Three of them look towards the water and three look inland.
Where is Granville Island?
Granville Island is situated on a small peninsula in False Creek, across from the downtown area of Vancouver.
It is located south of the downtown, right under the Granville Bridge in the Fairview Neighborhood.
Granville Island is easily accessible by car, public transit, bike, or even on foot.
What is the best time of day to visit Granville Island?
The morning is a good time to visit if you want to avoid the crowds and have a more relaxed experience.
The Public Market opens at 9 am, so if you want to do some shopping or grab a bite to eat, it’s best to go early before it gets too busy.
In addition, the morning offers cooler temperatures in the summer months, making it a comfortable time to explore the island on foot.
If you prefer a livelier atmosphere, then the afternoon and evening can be great times to visit.
More people tend to visit around the afternoon, and you’ll often find street performers and live music in public spaces.
Also, the restaurants and bars on Granville Island are popular spots for dinner and drinks in the evening.
Is Granville Island free?
Granville Island is free to visit, and there is no entrance fee to explore the island or the Public Market.
Visitors can stroll around the public areas, walk along the waterfront, and soak in the artsy ambiance without any cost.
However, while entry to the island is free, some specific attractions, activities, and experiences on Granville Island may have admission fees or charges.
For example, certain art galleries, theater performances, workshops, or tours may require a fee.
Additionally, if you choose to shop or dine at any of the restaurants or artisanal markets, those are separate expenses.
What are some of the best places to eat on Granville Island?
While in Granville Island, I suggest checking out a restaurant that was called Bridges.
Bridges used to be a famous landmark in Vancouver for over 42 years.
The original Bridges location has undergone renovations and a rebranding and is now known as Tap and Barrel.
You can’t miss it as it’s a large yellow building located right by the water.
Therefore, the restaurant has a year-round heated patio that overlooks downtown Vancouver.
Also, try Tony’s Fish & Oyster Cafe if you are looking for mainly seafood.
It is a little bit further than Bridges and a lot smaller.
What should I drink on Granville Island?
A great alcoholic beverage to try is the Granville Island beer. The brewery is located right on the island.
You can visit the brewery itself but if you don’t have time don’t worry, most of the restaurants on Granville Island as well as all of Vancouver offer Granville Island beer.
They have about five core beers which are English Bay Pale Ale, Northwest Pale Ale, German Style Pilsner (it is excellent), West Coast IPA, and the Raspberry Ale (seasonal).
I love beer, so we ended up trying all five of them. If you want a good basic beer I would recommend the Pilsner.
If you are more adventurous try their Raspberry Ale. Usually, I don’t like fruity beers but the raspberry one was great.
Also, they have seasonal small batches to choose from. The brewery offers daily tours and tastings as well.
Alternatively, if you like tea, try the Grandville Island Tea Company which is located in the Public Market.
We bought Passion Mango Green Tea, Citrus Blossom Green Tea, and Jasmine Green Tea loose leaf for home and we loved them.
Is Granville Island worth seeing?

It is a little bit out of the way but it is a nice place to enjoy the stunning nature.

Also, Afternoon Tea is available daily on a first come first served basis in the café.
There are picnic baskets as well available in the summer months.
How long does it take to tour Van Dusen Gardens?
On average, visitors spend about 1.5 to 2 hours exploring the various garden areas, pathways, and sights.
However, some people may choose to spend more time immersing themselves in the beauty of the gardens and taking leisurely strolls, while others might opt for a quicker visit.
We spend about two hours in the garden but you can easily spend the whole day.
Where is the VanDusen Botanical Garden?
The address of the VanDusen Botanical Garden is 5251 Oak Street, Vancouver, BC V6M 4H1.
It is situated on the west side of the city, near the intersection of West 37th Avenue and Oak Street.
How to get to the VanDusen Botanical Gardens?
You can access the VanDusen Botanical Gardens by driving or by using public transit.
The parking itself in VanDusen Botanical Garden is complimentary for visitors.
You can find the parking lot of VanDusen Botanical Garden conveniently situated on West 37th Avenue, just off of Oak Street.
For added convenience, there’s an accessible drop-off loop situated near the front entrance of the Garden, providing easy access.
The nearest SkyTrain station to VanDusen Botanical Garden is Oakridge-41st Avenue Station. It’s on the Canada Line and is located a 20 min walk away.
Alternatively, the R4 (Rapid Bus Green Line) also goes to Oakridge-41st Avenue Station.
There are a few buses that run on the streets parallel to the gardens, but we walked from the SkyTrain Station as it was easier. It is a lovely area for a stroll through.

Also, Arbutus St. runs parallel to the shoreline so you can access the beach from there.
Kits Beach is approximately 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) west of downtown Vancouver.
To get to Kits Beach from Downtown Vancouver you will have to cross the historic Burrard Street Bridge.
What is the closest Skytrain station to Kitsilano Beach?
The closest SkyTrain station to Kitsilano Beach is Yaletown-Roundhouse, on the Canada Line.
However, Yaletown-Roundhouse is still a 40 mins walk to Kits Beach or you can use a combination of buses to get there. It is easiest to drive or bike to Kits Beach.
Alternatively, you can take the False Creek Ferries from Granville Island to Kits Beach.
That’s what we did. It is a short ride, not more than 10 minutes.
You can walk from Yaletown-Roundhouse Station to Granville Island which is about 20 mins walk and then hop on the ferry to Kits Beach.
What amenities does Kitsilano Beach have?
The beach is equipped with amenities such as public restrooms, playgrounds, and picnic areas.
Which makes it an excellent destination for families and groups of friends.
There are lifeguards on duty, from late May (Victoria Day) to early September (Labour Day)
The beach features volleyball, tennis, and basketball courts for recreational activities as well.
Also, visitors can enjoy various water sports such as paddleboarding, kayaking, windsurfing, skimboarding, standup paddling, etc.
Additionally, check out the Kitsilano Pool, one of the largest saltwater swimming pools in North America.
The pool is outdoors and heated, providing visitors with a comfortable and enjoyable swimming experience.

There is a Concession Stand located close to the Kitsilano Pool where you can get some snacks & ice cream.
Some of the items you can get are fish & chips, cheeseburgers, French fries, hotdogs, etc.
If you are in the mood for a fancy meal, check out The Boathouse which has been around for over 35 years and offers seafood and steaks.
Beyond the sandy shores, Kitsilano Beach is surrounded by a lively neighborhood with plenty of dining options, boutique shops, and cafes.
Is Kitsilano Beach safe to swim?
Yes, Kitsilano Beach is generally safe for swimming.
The water quality is regularly monitored by Vancouver Coastal Health to ensure it meets safety standards for recreational use.
The beach water quality is monitored for E-coli bacteria every week from May to September.
Therefore, it is advisable to double-check their website before visiting.
Is Kitsilano Beach free?
Yes, Kitsilano Beach is free to the public.

However, if you drive you will need to pay for parking. There are two parking lots at Kits Beach – Kitsilano McNicoll and 1426 Arbutus St.
