Where Is Dublin Located?

Dublin is the capital of the Republic of Ireland, which takes up all of the southern parts of the island of Ireland. Dublin is located on the east coast.

The northern part of the island of Ireland is called Northern Ireland and is part of the United Kingdom.

Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland as well as a major city.

The Republic of Ireland is part of the EU and uses the Euro. You can travel between the two without a passport.

If you are staying in Northern Ireland for a while you will need British Pounds as well.

Places You Absolutely Need To Visit In Dublin

Let’s jump into the list of places that you absolutely need to visit in Dublin. And let’s start with a fun one!

1. Temple Bar

Temple Bar is the iconic pub area in Dublin. There is also a pub called Temple Bar.

So essentially, there is a Temple Bar bar in the Temple Bar area.

No visit to Dublin is complete without a stroll through it.

Despite what many people say, that the area is too touristy and overpriced, I completely disagree.

Of course, there were a lot of tourists, but the restaurants all had delicious food, and some of them even had live Irish music.

Also, there were a lot of street performers and the small cobbled streets are super cute and charming.

Also, Temple Bar is the place where you can go and have a drink or two or ten (no judging!), and relax after a busy day.

It’s lively, with a lot of chatter and music. We spent every evening in the Temple Bar area and had a great time.

What is a good restaurant to try in the Temple Bar area?

A great restaurant is Quays Irish Restaurant, which is right in the center of the area.

They have delicious Irish food such as Irish Stew, Cottage Pie, Slow Cooked Beef, and Guinness Stew.

Also, you can try some of the local beers such as Smithwick’s, Harp, Kilkenny, and O’Hara’s.

I tried all of them and they were excellent.

What drink should I try in the Temple Bar area?

I highly recommend trying the famous Black Currant Guinness which is essentially black currant juice poured into a Guinness pint.

Also, it is known as the Purple Guinness (the color doesn’t actually change).

The taste becomes sweet instead of bitter, an excellent choice for people who are not huge fans of Guinness but still want to enjoy it while in Ireland.

Lastly, don’t forget to say Sláinte, which is pronounced as “slawn-cha”. It means “health” in Irish but it is used as “cheers” when people make a toast.

2. Guinness Storehouse

I have to confess, that I am not a fan of Guinness, it’s too bitter even though I do like dark beers.

However, if you’re a beer drinker you have to try the Guinness produced at the Guinness Storehouse. It is unlike any other Guinness you will try elsewhere.

Keep in mind, that the Guinness Storehouse is a little bit out of the way compared to the rest of the attractions but totally worth the time.

What is inside the Guinness Storehouse?

There is a museum area with legendary Guinness advertisements and information on the brewery’s founder Arthur Guinness.

Also, there is a huge shop with many souvenirs and Guinness inspires trinkets.

Don’t forget the famous Gravity Bar, situated on the 7th floor, where you can enjoy a cold, fresh pint of Guinness overlooking beautiful Dublin.

Keep in mind that the Gravity Bar can get extremely crowded, especially in the evenings and weekends.

They even have an area where you learn how to pour the Guinness pint properly, and after the training, you receive a certificate (paid).

Also, you get a chance to learn how the unique beer is produced.

The four key ingredients that make Guinness have such a distinguished taste are the type of barley, hops, and yeast that they use.

They even have the option to add a second pint to your ticket that has your selfie on top of the foam (paid)!

Should I buy tickets for the Guinness Storehouse in advance?

As this attraction is popular, I recommend booking the tickets in advance.

You would probably need an hour to walk through the museum part.

Also, remember to leave time to enjoy your free pint of Guinness in the Gravity Bar (included in admission).

So, about 2 1/2 hours for the full experience.

Lastly, the building itself is interesting and is inspired by the shape of a pint glass.

Definitely worth seeing!

3. The Book of Kells / The Long Room of the Old Library / Trinity College

The Book of Kells is the oldest, most famous book that remains intact to this day.

It was completed around the ninth century and is one of Ireland’s greatest cultural treasures.

The book contains the four Gospels of the New Testament written in Latin and is made from calfskin vellum with lavish designs decorating the pages.

Can you take pictures of the Book of Kells?

Unfortunately, you cannot take pictures of the book itself.

And don’t even think about sneaking a quick shot between people as there are two security guards watching the display.

However, you can take pictures in the Long Room of the Old Library at Trinity College (which is awesome) leading to the Book of Kells.

Trinity College is a world-renowned university, the oldest in Ireland, and one of the places to visit in Dublin, Ireland.

Visitors are welcome to walk around the grounds of the college.

However, you can’t go inside any other building aside from the one housing the Old Library and The Book of Kells (they are in the same building).

If you have a pre-booked ticket, it will probably take you about an hour to see the Long Room of the Old Library and The Book of Kells.

If you want to walk around Trinity College and take pictures of the buildings, it would take about an extra half an hour.

You will need to book your tickets in advance, as the lineups are huge. Therefore, try to visit early in the morning, as it’s less crowded.

4. Dublin Castle

When we visited Dublin Castle, part of it was under renovation, so we weren’t able to see everything (we couldn’t go inside the tower in 2018).

We did a tour of the castle which was interesting and informative.

Dublin Castle is close to the city center, and it is easy to find the building.

However, it was difficult to find where to purchase the tickets.

Eventually, we found the Visitor Centre which is located in the upper courtyard of the State Apartments building.

We didn’t pre-book our tickets, and we were able to get them on the same day (the last admission is 5.15 pm, open daily).

However, keep in mind that tours get filled up quickly so go in the morning, even only to purchase your ticket as they run out fast.

Or you can book the tour I have mentioned above with the Book of Kells.

The tour is divided into two parts: the guided tour and the self-guided exploration.

They take about 30-45 mins. each.

During the guided tour, you can see the excavation site of a Viking settlement and the Gothic Chapel Royal.

You will then be led to the State Apartments to roam on your own.

5. Christ Church Cathedral and St. Patrick’s Cathedral

Those two are located close to each other and it is easy to include them in your tour around Dublin.

The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity is the formal name of the Christ Church Cathedral.

The Christ Church Cathedral has a cool bridge that is connected to another building that houses Dublinia (Viking and medieval experience).

Christ Church Cathedral

Unfortunately, you can only go through the bridge if you are coming from Dublinia to Christ Church Cathedral.

Also, the Cathedral is the oldest building in Dublin and it has the biggest medieval crypt in Ireland.

I would say it would take you no more than half an hour to 40 minutes to see the whole Cathedral, only because you will need more time to see the crypt.

The famous St. Patrick Cathedral is the tallest and largest Cathedral in Ireland.

It is situated in a well-maintained park.

Saint Patrick is the national saint of Ireland and a trip to Dublin is not complete without seeing this beautiful Gothic Cathedral.

You will probably be able to see everything in about 20 minutes to half an hour.

Also, please note that you need to pay to enter both churches.

We didn’t book tickets in advance; we walked in and bought the entry tickets, then conducted a self-guided tour.

Bonus – Places To Visit In Dublin

I decided to throw in a bonus place that you should check out.

Also, it is free and it would not take you that much time.

6. Oscar Wilde Statue and House

If you are a bookworm like me, you will probably love seeing the Oscar Wilde statue which sits on a rock and overlooks his house.

Oscar Wilde was a famous Irish poet and playwright.

Some of his most popular work includes The Happy Prince (my favorite), The Picture of Dorian Gray, and The Importance of Being Earnest.

The house is located in Merrion Square, and the statue is located in the northwest corner of Merrion Park.

You can see this attraction whenever you visit Trinity College as they are close to each other.

Unfortunately, his house is not open to visitors, but you can admire it from the outside.

This is his childhood home, designed in the Georgian architectural style, which was popular during his time.

Also, the park is a nice place to take a break and relax after walking all day.

An interesting fact about the statue is that it was never painted.

Instead, it is made of various colored stones from different countries.

Therefore, the stunning scenery, fascinating history, and convenient location make this a must-do.

FAQs: Places You Absolutely Need To Visit In Dublin

Let’s take a look at some of the frequently asked questions when it comes to places you absolutely need to visit in Dublin.

How to get around Dublin, Ireland?

The easiest way to see the main attractions in Dublin is by walking.

Everything is in the same area of the old town and manageable even if you don’t like walking.

If you prefer to do an organized walking tour, you have a few options to choose from below.

Keep in mind that Dublin doesn’t have a metro, only buses, and trams.

However, we did not use any of them while there.

If you want to drive in Ireland, remember that they drive on the left side of the road like in the UK.

Therefore, if you are planning to rent a car, the steering wheel will be on the other side of the car. Personally, I cannot drive on the left, it is not for me.

You would not need a car within Dublin but if you are planning to tour the whole island and you are comfortable with the left set up then go for it.

What currency do I need for Ireland?

The Euro is the official currency of Ireland, they don’t accept other currencies.

What is the best time to visit Ireland?

Visit Ireland in the summer months as the chances of rain are lower then.

Irish weather is unpredictable and it rains a lot, so bring rain gear and warm clothes even in the summer.

We visited in July and had good weather but it is best to be ready for rain.

Winter is cold and rainy, so I would not recommend going then (except for Christmas Markets).

They don’t usually get much snow, if it snows it is very little and doesn’t stay on the ground.
