Places To Visit In Europe In December – Northern Europe

Below you will find the best places in Northern Europe to visit in December.

1. Rovaniemi, Finland

By Michelle From Travel Her Story

As Santa Claus has made Lapland in Northern Finland his home for centuries, a visit to Rovaniemi, Finland, is the perfect destination to visit in December for the ultimate Christmas experience.

Aside from the holiday spirit, the main things to do in Rovaniemi are Northern Lights hunting, reindeer sleigh riding, dog sledding, and ice floating.

As well as snowshoeing, stopping by Santa’s Village, snowmobiling, sauna, checking out Ranua’s Arctic Wildlife Park, hiking, ice fishing, and visiting hotels made of snow and ice, and so much more!

How long you should spend in Rovaniemi will depend on why you’re going to Lapland.

Is it for the Northern Lights? If so, I recommend at least a week to give you the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights as they do not appear daily.

The Arctic Circle, Finland, cold, ice, Lapland, Places To Visit In Europe In December
The Arctic Circle

Statistically, the lights are visible every second night. However, I was in Finland for 12 days and saw them four times, so take this stat lightly.

Unless you’re coming from another part of Finland or its neighbor, Sweden, you’ll likely be flying into Rovaniemi.

Luckily, their airport is close to the city, making it very convenient. If you are coming from nearby, taking the train is a lovely option as it’ll allow you to relax and enjoy the wintery scenery.

My top recommendations for restaurants in Rovaniemi are Ravintola Roka, the Snow Restaurant and Ice Bar in Snowman World, and the Arctic SnowHotel Kota Restaurant.

Scandic Rovaniemi City is an excellent, budget-friendly hotel in a central location. For a bit of luxury and a stay full of activities, I suggest the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos.

Make sure you pack well for a trip to Rovaniemi. It was -20 degrees Fahrenheit when I was there, so stay warm as best you can!

Visiting Copenhagen in December offers a unique blend of festive cheer, delicious food, and cultural experience.

The Christmas markets are charming and the city is adorned with glowing lights and decorations.

December is surely one of the best magical times of the year to visit this beautiful city.

The Christmas markets in Copenhagen are filled with the aroma of roasted almonds, mulled wine (Gløgg in Danish), and freshly baked holiday Danish food like æbleskiver — Danish pancake balls filled with jam.

Also, you can buy high-quality handmade crafts. Take a stroll during the evening hours for a vibrant atmosphere.

During Christmas, the Tivoli Gardens, the world’s second oldest amusement park is beautifully decorated for Christmas.

Also, the Christmas market ends a couple of days before Christmas Eve.

3. Amsterdam

By Steff From Just Travelous

Amsterdam is easily one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.

It is great to visit all year long but in December, the city transforms with light installations all over the canals and streets during the annual Amsterdam Light Festival!

Take the Amsterdam Light Festival Canal Tour to see the festival highlights by boat.

Enjoy the festive Oliebollen, a fried doughnut ball covered in powdered sugar, a Christmas specialty.

Also, it is easy to find the German Gluhwein all over the city to enjoy while you are strolling through the city.

The museums are also much less crowded in December so you can enjoy the famous Van Gogh or Rijks Museum without the crowds.

It is perfect for a long weekend with a 3-day Amsterdam Itinerary as the perfect length to explore all the magic the city has to offer.

It is well connected by both plane and train to the rest of Europe.

The Schiphol Airport has a train directly to the airport for a quick and cheap trip right into the heart of the city.

Our favorite hotel is Hotel Not Hotel. It is a quirky hotel that is a little outside of the touristy area, so the restaurants are better and you have more of a local feel.

It is still easily walkable to get into the tourist areas.

By Pamela From The Directionally Challenged Traveler

Iceland in December offers a magical, wintry experience that’s hard to beat.

The allure of seeing the Northern Lights dancing across the night sky is one of the top reasons to visit during this time.

The long nights and dark skies create the perfect setting for viewing this natural phenomenon.

December in Iceland is also the season for exploring ice caves.

Located in the Vatnajökull glacier, these natural formations are only accessible during winter and provide a surreal, otherworldly adventure.

Combine this with visiting the beautiful waterfalls in Iceland, like Skogafoss or Seljalandsfoss for a breathtaking trip! Even if the snow melts, they are stunning!

Plan to stay at least five days to take in the highlights, this also increases your chances of seeing the Northern Lights as Mother Nature can be tricky.

Flights to Iceland land at Keflavik Airport, a 45-minute drive from the capital, Reykjavik.

For food, try Kaffi Loki, known for serving traditional Icelandic dishes like rye bread and lamb soup, which are perfect for warming up after a chilly day of sightseeing.

Pack warm layers and rent a 4×4 vehicle to navigate winter roads.

December may be cold, but with the chance to see the Northern Lights, explore ice caves, and experience Iceland’s winter landscapes, it’s well worth it.

Places To Visit In Europe In December – Germany

Let’s take a look at Germany next with its world-famous festive celebrations and Christmas Markets.

9. Munich

By Marianne From Galavanting the Globe

If you are planning to visit Munich in December, then you will definitely want to head to the Christmas markets.

As one of the oldest and most popular markets in Germany, the Munich Christmas Market dates back to the 14th century.

Each year, over three million visitors come to Marienplatz to experience the festive atmosphere.

The market has around 150 stalls that offer everything from handmade ornaments to traditional Bavarian clothing, delicious treats, and of course, Glühwein!

With several smaller markets to visit within walking distance of Marienplatz, plan to spend more than just one day in Munich to be able to fully experience it all.

As a matter of fact, 2 – 3 days in Munich to enjoy the markets, visit some of the city’s museums, and enjoy the festive atmosphere is more realistic.

Munich Christmas Market – Marienplatz during the day

Munich is home to an International Airport, so flying in couldn’t be easier. You would then take the train into the city center or rent a car.

If you are looking for a classic Bavarian meal, then head over to the Hofbräuhaus.

This famous beer hall serves delicious bratwurst, pretzels, braised pork knuckle, warm apple strudel, and a great selection of German beer.

Of course, if you are looking for something a little lighter, you will find some incredible local food in the Christmas Markets.

Staying in Altstadt-Lehel, Munich’s historic center is the most convenient option. This is especially true if you do not have a vehicle.

The Old Town is closest to the markets and main attractions, as well as some awesome restaurants, shops and cafes.

But just a heads up, Munich is one of the most expensive cities in Germany to visit.

So you can save a little money by staying outside of the Old Town, and not eating in the most popular restaurants.

10. Hamburg

By Cosette From KarsTravels

Hamburg, located in the North of Germany, is the perfect place to get in the Christmas spirit.

There are 20+ Christmas markets. Each of the Christmas markets in Hamburg has its own unique theme.

Next to numerous Christmas markets, there’s a Fairytales parade each weekend and the city center is festively decorated and illuminated.

Visit at least a couple of the different Christmas markets in December to experience the different themes.

The markets are open from the end of November till December 23rd.

You can visit a traditional market at St. Petri, a pink Winterpride market at St. Georg or a ‘red light’ themed one in Sankt Pauli, dubbed Santa Pauli during December.

If you visit Hamburg on a Saturday then watch the Fairy Tales parade. The parade has angels, reindeer, Santa’s and more.

Take about one to two hours per Christmas market.

A weekend getaway would be best, to see more than one market, and to see them in the evening when the lights are on.

Hamburg has an international airport and a large train station. To move around the city, use the subway or walk around.

When visiting Hamburg in December, you have to eat at the stalls in the markets. German treats such as pretzels, currywurst, roasted chestnuts and glühwein are being sold and are delicious.

The best areas to stay at are either the city center, HafenCity or St. Georg.

11. Vienna

By Goya From Goya Galeotta

If you’re looking for a December getaway that feels like stepping into a storybook, Vienna should be at the top of your list.

The city goes all out for the holidays, with its famous Christmas Markets popping up all over town.

From the main one by the City Hall (Christkindlmarkt on the Rathausplatz) to the artsy ones in Maria-Theresien-Platz and Karlsplatz.

And of course, the most majestic one by the one-and-only Schönbrunn Palace, it’s like Vienna was designed for the festive season!

With twinkling lights, the scent of mulled wine in the air, and stalls filled with handcrafted goodies, each market is a definite must-see.

Also, December is when Vienna’s music scene shines, with the Christmas in Vienna concert at the Konzerthaus and Vienna Philharmonic shows being a seasonal highlight.

Having said that, getting tickets, especially in December, can be tough since they sell out quickly — in fact, Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert even uses a lottery system!

So booking months in advance is a must, but for a backup plan, you can try standing-room tickets or enjoy other great performances like the Vienna Boys’ Choir.

Belvedere Palace, Vienna, Austria, Places To Visit In Europe In December
Places To Visit In Europe In December – Belvedere Palace, Vienna

While a 3-4 day stay is ideal for enjoying everything Vienna has to offer, you can also just pop by for the weekend.

There are frequent flights to Vienna International Airport (VIE) from all over the world or you can just take an easy train ride from nearby European cities.

Getting around Vienna using public transport is super easy with the city’s extensive network of trams, buses, and the U-Bahn (subway).

However, if you’re short on time, you may want to opt to stay in the Innere Stadt area for easy access to markets and cultural spots.

Pack layers! It’s cold, but Vienna’s charm will warm you right up.

And, of course, no matter the season, a stop by Café Central for its apple strudel, and Hotel Sacher for their famous Sachertorte, is an absolute must!

12. Lech

By Caitriona From The Facts Institute

Lech is like a luxury winter wonderland in December.

The small village surrounded by the Alps is blanketed with snow in winter, which makes it a perfect time to go skiing.

This location is well known and frequented in winter, and it is where royalty such as Princess Diana visited in the 1990s.

It was actually my first time skiing, and my partner and I hired a trainer to help us get started, which was well worth the experience!

Also, there are a lot of children learning how to ski too, so it’s a perfect place for families of all ages and levels of experience.

Lech in the winter, Austria, mountain
Lech in the winter

The restaurants in Lech have some great food options but are very expensive.

Therefore, rather than eat out three times a day, we found some nice ready-made and baked goods in the local grocery store, which helped us budget better.

We spent three days in Lech, which was enough time for us, but you could easily spend a week there if you are a serious snowboarder or skier.

The destination is not the easiest to get to and needs to be arranged in advance.

We took a train line from Innsbruck, which is the closest airport to Lech, to  St Anton am Arlberg and then took a bus that transferred us to our destination.

We stayed in a lovely apartment in the village itself, which I highly recommend called Haus Sebastian.

December is a wonderful time to visit Rome, with the city’s festive decorations and vibrant atmosphere.

Rome’s off-season, including December, sees cooler temperatures and fewer crowds than during the peak summer months. It’s an ideal time to explore Rome’s historical and cultural landmarks.

The Vatican’s Christmas celebrations are a highlight of December in Rome.

This includes a beautiful nativity scene in St. Peter’s Square and the Pope’s Midnight Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica.

Lastly, don’t miss the Vatican’s charity holiday concert, “Concerto di Natale.”

Elsewhere in Rome, visit the popular Christmas market at Piazza Navona, “Festa della Befana,” filled with crafts, gifts, and delicious seasonal treats.

14. Verona

By Zi From Italy Finds

When visiting Italy in winter, Verona is a must-see. I fell in love with this city in December, and I think you will too.

The streets sparkle with lights, and the air fills with the warm scent of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts.

The Christmas market in Piazza dei Signori is where the magic happens. I spent hours wandering through the stalls, sampling delicious panettone and picking up unique handmade gifts.

You can’t miss visiting the Arena di Verona. It hosts festive performances that fill the ancient amphitheater with holiday cheer and you need to see the iconic Stella Cometa gracing it.

And if you’re a hopeless romantic (or even if you’re not), stop by Juliet’s House to leave your own love note in the courtyard.

Verona Piazza Dante, Italy

I recommend spending three to four days in Verona in winter.

This gives you plenty of time to soak up the atmosphere and explore nearby attractions, like Lake Garda despite the shorter days.

Getting here is easy: fly into Verona Villafranca Airport or hop on a train from nearby cities like Venice or Milan.

For dinner, head to Trattoria al Pompiere. Their pastissada de caval (horse stew) is a must-try, especially when paired with a glass of Amarone wine.

By Or From My Path In The World

If you love Christmas markets and fairs, elegantly decorated streets and window shops, and a northern Italian vibe, visiting Milan in December is a great idea.

The main focal point is the Christmas Market around the city’s iconic Duomo, one of the largest cathedrals in the world that took almost 600 years to complete.

The area is a delight to explore by day and night, with countless stalls selling ornaments, souvenirs, and sweet and salty treats.

Next is the Oh Bej! Oh Bej! Christmas Fair near the beautiful Castello Sforzesco, an event dating back to the 16th century.

On the outskirts of the city, an even bigger fair takes place, Artigiano in Fiera, with thousands of stalls selling artisanal goods from all over the world!

Duomo in Milan, church

Of course, you should also visit Milan’s top sights, including Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie housing Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper mural, Pinacoteca di Brera art museum, and more.

The city center, in general, is the ideal area to stay, but the Brera district is particularly charming.

As for food, Trattoria Milanese is a good place to indulge in local regional cuisine. In addition, the famous Christmastime cake, panettone, originated in Milan, so it’s the perfect place to try it.

Visiting Valencia in winter is not only about the weather, though.

The city has a lovely Christmas vibe with Christmas markets and even an ice skating rink at Plaza del Ayuntamiento where you can rent skates and swirl on the ice right next to the Mediterranean.

If you’re looking for unique Christmas gifts, head to the Christmas Market at Plaza de la Reina where you find a wide variety of artisan items.

Also, Valencia sets up a lot of impressive nativity scenes, including human-sized ones which are worth seeing.

Getting to Valencia is easy with an international airport in the city connecting to European destinations and beyond.

Train and bus connections are also frequent and the high-speed train from Madrid takes you from the capital in only 2 hours.

To get the most out of Valencia, you should spend at least 2-3 days as the City of Arts and Sciences with its futuristic architecture and interesting museums can easily take a day to explore alone.

Staying centrally either in the old town or in Ruzafa is preferable so you’re close to all attractions, restaurants, and bars. For food, make sure you try Paella!

After all, the paella roots from Valencia. At Suc de Lluna BioCafè in the Mercado de Colón, they serve first class vegan paella.

19. Malaga

By Cristina From My Little World of Travelling

If you fancy a sunny city break in December, look no further than Malaga.

This city in the south of Spain is famous for its beaches, and therefore, it is a popular summer destination. However, Malaga has a lot to offer in winter.

One of the reasons why you might want to come to Malaga, besides the weather, is the Christmas atmosphere.

It is way far from the winter wonderland destinations, but it is amazing to experience Spanish Christmas.

Calle Larios, Malaga’s main street, is a hotspot in December.

The Christmas lights and show attract travellers from all over the world. Also, you can see the nativity scenes, check out the Christmas Market in the port, and eat nougat.

Besides Christmas, December is also good for anyone who loves hiking. There are stunning hiking trails a short drive from the city.

Malaga City can be visited in two days, but it’s surrounded by beautiful small towns worth visiting, such as Mijas Pueblo, so you might want to spend a few more days.

Another good thing about travelling to Malaga is its airport.

You are likely to find flights from most European cities and it is well-connected with the city.

You can take the short-distance train or bus to the city centre.

Last but not least, if this is your first time visiting Malaga, staying close to the historic centre is your best choice.

AC Hotel by Marriott Malaga Palacio is beautifully decorated and a good central hotel.

Places To Visit In Europe In December – Portugal

Let’s take a look at some destinations in Portugal.

20. Lisbon

By Ana From WeTravel Portugal

Lisbon is a great destination to visit in December, the capital of Portugal blends mild winter weather, with festive charm and rich cultural experiences.

The city’s Mediterranean climate means temperatures typically range from 10°C to 16°C (50°F to 61°F), providing a pleasant escape from colder climates.

During December, Lisbon transforms into a winter wonderland with beautifully decorated streets, light displays, and lots of lively Christmas markets.

Key places like Rossio Square and Praça do Comércio feature impressive displays, making evening strolls particularly delightful as each corner and praça in Lisbon has its own take on the event.

Visitors can enjoy traditional Portuguese holiday treats, such as Rabanadas (Portuguese French toast), Bolo-rei (Portuguese king cake) and vinho quente (mulled wine).

As well as your typical Lisbon food and drinks like Pastéis de Nata and Ginjinha.

The quieter tourist season allows for a more relaxed experience while visiting some of the city’s iconic sites.

Places like São Jorge Castle and Jerónimos Monastery are much less busy than during the typical tourist season.  Which allows visitors to see much more of the city and spend less time queuing.

A 3 to 4 day stay, or long weekend allows enough time to enjoy the highlights of Lisbon, and fully explore the city’s unique winter charm.

Getting to Lisbon is easy, and the city has a major international airport with flight connections to most major European cities.

21. Setubal

By Caitlin Boylan From Everything Setubal

The Setubal region of Portugal has arguably the best beaches in the country.

And you might think then, shouldn’t I visit in summer rather than December? Nope!

While summer on the beaches is nice, December on the beaches is unbeatable. There are no crowds.

And on a bright, sunny winter day you can get temperatures that go into the 60s.

Lying on the sand in that weather is amazing. You might not want to be in a bikini, but you also don’t have to worry about crazy sunburns or a boom box disturbing your peace.

In the city of Setubal, you’ll find gorgeous holiday decorations. While there is nothing wildly over the top, there are also none of the crowds that come with efforts like that.

Setubal, Portugal
Setubal, Portugal

The spots I’d recommend stopping by to see the lights are the Câmara Municipal de Setúbal, right off the main square in the city center.

As well as Sem Horas, a restaurant just down the road (which is also great for dinner!).

Also, there is a small Christmas market set up along the promenade which runs through the middle of Avenue Luisa Todi — the main road in town.

I’d recommend stopping for a mulled wine, or better yet a Ginjinha — Portuguese cherry liquor which you can drink out of a little chocolate shot glass.

This area, baixa, or downtown, is also where you should look to stay during your visit.

Give Setubal at least two days. It’s an easy bus or train ride from Lisbon and can be added nicely to a Portugal itinerary.

Places To Visit In Europe In December – Eastern Europe

Next, let’s look at the best places to visit in December in Eastern Europe.

22. Sofia, Bulgaria

By Ayushi Tandon From Laptops And Landscapes

Sofia transforms into a charming winter wonderland in December.

The city hosts its festive Christmas markets, which are great for their traditional Bulgarian food, live performances and buzzing atmosphere.

If you’re looking for some winter ski action, Vitosha Mountain near Sofia is well-known for skiing, snowboarding, and other winter sports.

Also, it is conveniently located a short 30-40 minutes drive from Sofia’s city center and can be easily reached by taxi or public transport.

The chillier days in December are perfect for a cozy meal in a traditional Bulgarian restaurant.

Make sure to try some traditional Bulgarian dishes like Kapama, Banitsa, Sarmi along with some warming Rakia.

Rakia is a traditional Bulgarian fruit brandy made from fermented fruits like grapes, plums, and apricots.

For more arts and culture, a walking tour around Sofia is a perfect way to orient yourself to the city while learning some history.

If you prefer to keep warm while exploring,  then the National Art Gallery as well as the Museum of Socialist Art are excellent options.

Sofia is accessible via Sofia International Airport. From here you can reach Sofia city center by taking the M4 metro (20 mins, 1.60 BGN / $0.90) or a taxi (20-30 mins, 15-20 BGN / $8-11).

Sofia is generally a safe city to explore with plenty of tourist-friendly neighbourhoods with close proximity to attractions and places to go out.

Both Vitosha Boulevard and Oborishte are great areas with plenty of dining options close to the cultural center of Sofia.

23. Prague, Czech Republic

By Lizet From A Woonderfood World

Prague, Czech Republic is one of those cities that everybody should visit at least once.

It’s already magical in the summer, with the castle towering over the city, the old Charles Bridge and authentic old houses. But it only gets better when the weather goes down.

Foggy days or maybe even snow, add a special layer of magic to this city.

In December you’ll find Christmas markets all around the city and hot drinks on every corner of the streets. Just watch out for the slippery cobblestones!

Grab a hot drink at the Letná beergarden, while overlooking the city, or warm up in one the the many restaurants and try some local beers.

One of my favourites is Pivovar Národní, a local brewery and authentic Czech restaurant in the centre of the city.

I’m a fan of the gulash soup (gulášová polévka), a perfect dish for a cold day. In some restaurants, they serve it in bread, which is even better!

Stay in Malá Strana for a romantic surrounding, on the border of the city centre. The Golden Star just below the castle is an amazing luxury hotel where you can get some well-deserved rest.

Are you looking for a more local vibe? Then find something small-scale in Vinohrady, surrounded by local pubs and quieter Christmas markets.

Prague isn’t the biggest city, but you can easily fill 4-5 days if you head out of the centre.

There is an airport just outside the city, and if you’re coming from European countries it’s pretty easy to reach by train.

Prague is pretty much the centre of Europe, so wherever you come from, there’s usually an easy (night)train connection.

If you have more time, consider a day trip to Český Krumlov.

Places To Visit In Europe In December – Mediterranean

Let’s take a look at some countries in the Mediterranean area.

25. Athens

By Nofar Ronen From Traveling Outside The Box

Athens is an excellent destination for December for several reasons: pleasant weather that makes it enjoyable to explore the city, festive Christmas decorations, and a lively, vibrant atmosphere.

The average temperatures in Athens during December range from 8°C to 15°C (46°F to 59°F).

When we visited Athens in December, we were lucky to have great weather with hardly any rain.

We took advantage of this by joining a fantastic four-and-a-half-hour bike tour with “Athens by Bike.”

Another highlight was a culinary experience—a four-hour food tour with “Alternative Athens,” where we made eight stops for food tastings.

A must-visit in Athens is the famous Monastiraki Flea Market, perfect for browsing unique finds.

Of course, no trip to Athens would be complete without visiting the iconic Acropolis.

In December, Athens is beautifully decorated for the holidays. Make sure to visit Syntagma Square, home to the largest Christmas tree in the city.

Another festive spot is Omonia Square, where you’ll find the second-largest tree and a charming Christmas market.

Athens, the capital of Greece, is easily accessible by direct flights from most European cities, and you can also reach it by ferry from some of the Greek islands.

For a magical coffee break, head to Little Kook, a café that’s impressive year-round, but especially enchanting during the holiday season.

We stayed at the boutique hotel Coco-Mat, located in the upscale Kolonaki area, just a 15-20 minute walk from the central Plaka district.

27. Istanbul

By Marina From Travel Eat Blog

Visiting Istanbul in December offers a unique experience.

While many travelers choose snowy getaways or European holiday markets, Istanbul provides the perfect blend of rich history and culture with milder winter weather.

With temperatures averaging around 50°F and fewer tourists, you can enjoy the city at a relaxed pace.

To fully explore Istanbul, I recommend spending at least 4-5 days.

This will give you time to see the key sights, although you may still have to choose between Istanbul’s many iconic landmarks.

A must-see is Hagia Sophia, a former Byzantine church (and now a mosque) with a fascinating history.

For a one-of-a-kind shopping experience, head to the Grand Bazaar, one of the world’s oldest and largest covered markets offering everything from spices and jewelry to unique souvenirs.

Lastly, visit the Basilica Cistern, a structure spanning nearly 10,000 square meters that once supplied water to Constantinople’s Great Palace.

Istanbul’s culinary scene is also not to be missed. And while you won’t be disappointed with lunch and dinner, Turkish breakfast is a must.

Start your day with “kahvaltı” – a spread of bread, cheeses, olives, eggs, and jams. Plus, don’t forget to try Turkish coffee and tea while you’re there.

For convenient access to the city’s main attractions, stay in the Sultanahmet area, the historic heart of Istanbul.

Public transportation is your best option for getting around, as traffic can be quite busy, even in December.

And don’t forget to pack layers—winter can still bring some chilly weather!
