”A Day Trip Around Mallorca” was updated in 2024.

We visited the beautiful island of Mallorca in October 2019 and spent some time exploring the capital – Palma de Mallorca.

During our stay in Palma, we ventured out to explore the rest of the island as well.

🦄 If you want to know more about Palma de Mallorca, check out my blog post about the 5 Things You Must See In Palma De Mallorca

In it, you will find out what was our experience doing this trip from Palma de Mallorca, where to eat, where to stay, and how to get around (tram and train).

After reading this blog post, you will have a better idea of what to expect from visiting small Mallorcan towns like Port of Sóller and Sóller.

Also, you will find out how to do the famous tram (Tramvia de Sóller) that connects Port of Sóller and Sóller and all about the vintage wooden train (Ferrocarril de Sóller) that goes between Sóller and Palma.

Keep This In Mind!

Keep in mind, that if you are doing this trip on your own, most people do this day trip a bit differently:

On the tour, we did: Bus (tour bus) from Palma to Sa Calobra, a boat ride from Sa Calobra to Port of Sóller, a tram ride from Port of Sóllers to Sóller, and Sóller to Palma via a vintage wooden train. This makes a circle so that you see different sights.

Most people who decide to do it on their own: A vintage wooden train from Palma to Sóller, a tram ride from Sóller to Port of Sóller, and then returning the same way back to Palma.

Essentially, it is up to you which route you choose to do but the organized tour is a lot easier and you see more sights.

What is Mallorca Known For?

Mallorca is one of the Balearic Islands (the largest) located in the western Mediterranean Sea.

It is known for its warm weather, beautiful coastline, and beach resorts.

Mallorca has a rich history that goes back all the way to the Roman Empire.

Also, it was conquered by the Byzantine Empire and the Moors.

All of them have left their distinct cultural heritage on the island.

Palma (full name Palma de Mallorca) is the capital as well as the largest city in Mallorca.

A Day Trip Around Mallorca

Let’s get into the actual tour around Mallorca and what we ended up doing and seeing.

Leather Shop

Our first stop was a leather shop. I am not a huge fan of leather and I don’t like the way it smells at all.

So I quickly looked around and waited outside.

Actually, I was pretty hungry as we didn’t have time to get breakfast, so I ran across the street and grabbed a little sandwich and coffee from a café while I waited for the group to finish shopping.

This is what the leather shop looked like

Obviously, I did not purchase anything. However my partner did, he got a belt and a pair of shoes.

Some of the products you can find in the shop are purses, wallets, pouches, shoes, belts, other accessories, etc.

There is also an area where you can see separate pieces of leather and see how they use it to create their products.

In this section, you can see how they make their products

Sa Calobra

After leaving the leather shop we continued on our way to Sa Calobra.

Sa Calobra is a small village located in the Tramuntana mountain range.

It is known for its serpentine road and stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the Mediterranean Sea.

Also, the Sa Calobra road is popular among cyclists and motorists for its challenging but scenic route.

Tourists visiting Mallorca often include Sa Calobra as a stop on their itinerary to admire its natural beauty and breathtaking scenery.

The Serra de Tramuntana mountains are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and have some pretty high peaks made out of limestone.

Not to mention that the entire area is littered with different Mediterranean vegetation such as lime, olive, and palm trees.

We got to a small beach area where we had some free time to roam around.

Exploring the area, we found some interesting caves.

The water was crystal clear and there were a lot of people chilling on the beach.

Lunch

This is also where we stopped and had lunch (not included).

There were a few restaurants to choose from and there were quite a lot of options in terms of food.

Also, you could find some souvenir shops and a few ice cream parlors.

fish and chips, lunch, Sa Calobra, beer, dessert
This was our lunch – local fish and chips with veggies. Also, local beer and a dessert.

Keep in mind that after this you will be going on a boat so if you get seasick you might not want to eat too much.

The boat is pretty big and stable but if you’re worried take antinausea medication beforehand.

Eventually, we boarded the boat (called Torrent de Pareis) and traveled from Sa Calobra to Port de Sóller.

Port of Sóller

We arrived at Port de Sóller after about a 40-minute boat ride on board Torrent de Pareis. I love this small coastal town.

The tour guide gave us a little bit of free time and after that, we boarded the tram that drove us around the coast to Sóller.

There are tons of restaurants and bars around the promenade in Port de Sóller.

Sóller

In Sóller, we had some free time where we had a chance to explore the city’s main church – the Church of Sant Bartomeu and the central square.

The Church of Sant Bartomeu has an interesting facade and a large rose window.

The interior is nice but pretty average for a church.

Around it, there are a bunch of cute restaurants and cafes.

The tram rails go right through the center of the square.

I tried to take that famous shot of the tram and the church behind it but there was no tram passing by at that moment.

We loved Port of Sóller and Sóller, such a wonderful area.

Where to eat in Sóller, Mallorca?

Personally, I would choose a restaurant in Port of Sóller compared to Sóller but you can still find some nice places, especially around the main square.

The restaurants will be significantly cheaper in Sóller but there won’t be as much variety.

Casa Alvaro – Great small restaurant located right beside the Church of Sant Bartomeu and the train station. They offer a modern take on traditional Spanish tapas such as patatas bravas.

Cafè Es Firó – If you are looking for a snack or lunch, check out this place. They have a huge menu including tapas, hamburgers, combination plates (salads, potatoes & meat), bocadillos (sandwiches made with Spanish bread similar to a baguette).

Vintage wooden train (Ferrocarril de Sóller)

After we had time to explore Sóller, we boarded a vintage wooden train that took us from Sóller to a stop close to Palma de Mallorca (Apeadero de Son Reus).

There we met our bus which drove us back to our respective hotels.

The train doesn’t have glass windows so it makes for a lovely ride, as you’re practically outside.

Also, that helps with taking clearer pictures and videos as there is no reflection in the glass.

When is the best time to visit Mallorca?

During the summer months, the weather in Mallorca is hot and dry.

It has a typical Mediterranean climate.

We visited in late October and the temperatures were in the high 20s.

Going to Mallorca in the spring or fall as we did is a good idea because you avoid all the excruciating hot temperatures in the summer.

Also, you will avoid the crowds and hoards of tourists.

It was still busy when we visited, so I cannot imagine during the high season.
