Located in Mississippi Station, Ontario, this off-grid glamping accommodation gives you the opportunity to stay in a handcrafted covered wagon surrounded by 50 private acres.

I recently stayed at the Black Sheep Wagon to experience the property for myself and see what an off-grid glamping stay here is actually like.

From the wagon itself to the outdoor space and the amenities provided, there are quite a few things that make this stay different from a traditional hotel or Airbnb.

In this Black Sheep Wagon review, I’ll go through what the wagon is like and what amenities are available.

As well as, what you can expect from the property, and some of the things you may want to know before booking.

What Is The Black Sheep Wagon?

The Black Sheep Wagon is a handcrafted, prairie schooner-style covered wagon.

It is located in a peaceful meadow on 50 private acres near Mississippi Station, Ontario.

The wagon offers an off-grid glamping experience and is powered by solar energy.

It’s approximately a 3-hour drive from Toronto and about 1.5 hours from Ottawa.

You can self-check in with a lockbox, allowing you to arrive and settle in without needing to coordinate your arrival with the hosts.

Also, there is no washer or dryer on the property, so if you’re planning a longer stay, it’s something to keep in mind when packing.

The Black Sheep Wagon Review – Amenities

Let’s take a look at some of the amenities that are available in the Black Sheep Wagon and around it.

The Living Space

The living area inside the Black Sheep Wagon has a cozy, rustic-modern setup while keeping things simple.

Keep in mind that the wagon has no Wi-Fi and limited cell service.

This makes the living space a good place to slow down and disconnect.

Also, there are board games, books, and playing cards, so you can spend some downtime inside without needing a television or your phone.

One of the unique features of the Black Sheep Wagon is the elevated rumble seat located at the front of the wagon.

It gives you a spot to sit outside and enjoy the surrounding property while taking in the peaceful setting.

There is a small table with seating, providing a cozy spot to sit down and enjoy a meal or play a game of cards.

The Kitchen

The Black Sheep Wagon has a compact, well-equipped kitchenette that provides the basics you need to prepare simple meals during your stay.

Since this is an off-grid accommodation, the kitchen is designed to keep things practical and simple rather than functioning like a full-size kitchen.

The main cooking appliance in the wagon is a two-burner stove that is hooked up to a propane tank at the back of the wagon.

There is also a foot-pump sink, which gives you a place to wash up while cooking as well as brush your teeth.

One important thing to know before your stay is that there is no refrigerator in the wagon.

You should bring a cooler and ice for perishables, so you’ll want to plan your meals and groceries with this in mind.

There are pots and pans available for cooking, along with oil, salt, and pepper.

For serving and eating, the kitchen has plates, bowls, cups, wine glasses, cutlery, and other utensils.

If you want to make tea, there is a hot water kettle as well as a French press coffee maker.

The hosts also provide coffee grounds, powdered milk, and sugar. The coffee was actually really good!

The Bedroom

The sleeping area has a queen-size bed that is kinda elevated from the ground.

I found the cotton linens and mattress to be very comfortable; we slept super well with the fresh air.

Because the wagon is a small space, the sleeping and living areas are incorporated into the same overall interior rather than being separate rooms.

One of the unique features of the sleeping area is the window right beside the pillow.

The window has a net, allowing you to have it open while still keeping the space protected from bugs.

There are two small lamps beside the bed as well.

They are convenient for reading without needing to turn on the main lights.

Also, there is a place to charge your phone right by the sleeping area, so you can easily keep your devices charged overnight.

Keep in mind that all the electricity comes from the solar battery, which charges during the day.

However, they have an extra battery in case the solar one runs out.

The Bathroom

The bathroom setup at the Black Sheep Wagon is designed to fit with the property’s off-grid glamping experience.

Rather than having a traditional indoor bathroom, there is an outdoor shower which is solar-heated, meaning the water is warmed by the sun.

This is something to keep in mind when planning your shower.

The experience is different from having a standard shower with an unlimited supply of hot water.

We did use the outdoor shower, and it was actually kinda fun; you just have to be quick.

Body wash is provided, but you will need to bring your own bath towels.

For using the washroom, there is a standard outhouse located on the property.

Toilet paper is provided, so you don’t need to pack your own.

There are two flashlights that you can use if you need to use the outhouse in the middle of the night.

The Outdoors

One of the highlights of staying at the Black Sheep Wagon is that it’s surrounded by an open field.

There is a fire pit near the wagon where you can sit around the fire in the evening. Firewood is provided free of charge.

Also, there is a BBQ available if you want to cook outside instead of using the kitchen inside the wagon.

A small outdoor table and chair provide a simple place to sit, have your morning coffee, enjoy a meal, or just spend some time outside.

The hosts provide barbecue utensils and everything you need for grilling, such as grilling tongs, flippers, and so on.

In addition, you have access to the entire 50-acre property.

Including more than 2 km of marked trails that lead from the banks of a small creek up to hilltops with views for miles.

You can bring bikes, canoes, kayaks, or ATVs, as the property is close to lakes, rivers, and the K&P Trail.

Also, on a clear night, the stars look amazing!
