Casa Batllo

This is another renowned architectural masterpiece that was designed by Antoni Gaudí.

Casa Batlló (pronounced Casa Bat-yo) was built between 1904 and 1906 for the Batlló family.

The façade features a wavy, organic appearance with colorful mosaics, and it’s often referred to as the “House of Bones” due to its skeletal and bone-like columns and balconies.

Blue Ticket – entrance to Casa Batlló without FastPass entry. An audio guide is included but not the Virtual Reality Tablet (I loved the tablet, it was worth it). This is the most basic ticket available.

Silver Ticket – no FastPass entry but includes Gaudí Dôme, Virtual Reality Tablet, and the original Concierge Room.

Gold Ticket – FastPass entrance included access to Lord Batlló’s bedroom and access to the exclusive outdoor lounge. This option includes everything in Casa Batllo as well as Free cancellation (the other options do not). However, it is the most expensive ticket.

The Casa Batllo, Barcelona tickets that we got were the Silver ticket option.

You need to keep in mind that the tickets are timed which means that you need to pick a time to enter when you purchase the ticket.

Our ticket was for 10 AM and even though we visited in October there were still a lot of people so I highly suggest pre-booking your Barcelona Casa Batllo tickets.

Casa Vicens

Park Guell

Park Güell is a public park that was designed by Gaudi.

The construction of Park Guell started in 1900.

Eusebi Guell was planning to create an estate for wealthy families in the area that is now the park.

He commissioned Gaudi (they were good friends) to design and oversee the project.

However, due to many reasons, the project’s completion was unviable and construction was halted in 1914.

In 1922, the park was acquired by the city and soon after was turned into a public park.

Consequently, in 1984 the park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 

Park Güell is known for its unique architectural elements, colorful mosaics, and organic shapes.

Some of the key features of the park include the grand entrance with a colorful dragon-like sculpture made of mosaics, winding pathways lined with decorative tiles, and various buildings and structures with whimsical designs.

One of the most iconic spots within the park is the large terrace area with a serpentine bench covered in vibrant ceramic tiles, providing panoramic views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea.

The closest Metro stop is considered Lesseps which is on the green line (L3).

The closest entrance to Lesseps is Avinguda del Santuari de Sant Josep de la Muntanya, which is about a 20-minute walk away.

Park Guell is divided into two sections.

The first one is the Monumental Zone which is the area that has all of Gaudi’s creations.

It is a small portion of the park and to enter it you need to have a paid timed ticket.

The second is the rest of the park which is free and it features mostly gardens and paths.

They do sell tickets at the door, however, you might have to wait in a long queue to get them.

Also, the times you prefer might not be available or the tickets for the whole day might be sold out.

This option is the admission ticket to the Monumental Zone.

It includes the Dragon Stairway, el drac statue, Hypostyle Room, Nature Square, Casa del Guarda, Porter’s Lodge, etc.

You have the flexibility to explore Park Güell at your own pace and stay as long as you like after doing the Monumental Zone.

Also, this ticket comes with a free audio guide app on your smartphone, however, you need to bring your own headphones.

The best times to visit Park Guell are early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

You will need to meet your guide at Carretera del Carmel, 23, Barcelona specifically – you cannot enter on your own or from a different entrance.

Therefore, make sure you are on time or you will miss your tour and will not be able to enter the park.

The guide will be holding a sign that says “Golden Tour Guide”.

Keep in mind that Park Guell is located on a hill and it is large so there will be a lot of walking.

Therefore, wear comfortable shoes and clothes as well as sunscreen.

Sagrada Familia

Sagrada Familia is a world-famous basilica and one of the most iconic and recognizable landmarks in the city.

La Sagrada Familia has been under construction for over a century and as of right now they’re hoping to have it completed by 2026.

Construction of Sagrada Familia began in 1882 under architect Francisco de Paula del Villar.

However, Gaudí took over the project in 1883 and completely transformed its design.

Gaudí devoted much of his life to the basilica, and he worked on it until he died in 1926.

UNESCO declared the basilica a World Heritage Site in 2005, due to its stunning architectural features and innovative style.

The basilica’s façades are adorned with intricate sculptures, biblical scenes, and detailed ornamentation.

Each façade represents a different part of the life of Christ, and there are plans for a total of 18 spires, each dedicated to a different religious figure.

Currently, only eight towers have been completed.

Is it worth going inside Sagrada Familia?

One of the most remarkable aspects of Sagrada Familia is its unique interior design.

Gaudí aimed to create a space that would resemble a forest, with columns resembling tree trunks branching out to support the ceiling.

The play of natural light through stained glass windows creates a mesmerizing interplay of colors inside the basilica.

Despite its long construction history, the Sagrada Familia remains unfinished.

Gaudí’s original plans were extremely ambitious, and due to financial constraints, political turmoil, and various technical challenges, the construction progressed slowly.

To get to Sagrada Familia use the Metro and get off at the stop with the same name on lines L2 (purple) and L5 (dark blue).

This is the exact tour that we did of Sagrada Familia and we liked it.

You have an option to do one of the towers as well.

It is recommended to see the Nativity Tower if possible because it was built during Gaudi’s time.

The number of stairs, by the way, is over 500. Keep in mind that the stairs are winding, they have no railing and there is not a lot of space.

There are elevators in the towers however, remember that you might have to use the stairs to come down (that’s what it said on our tickets).

Unfortunately, when we visited there were a whole bunch of protests going on for Catalan independence and some of the protests started turning violent.

Therefore, the towers were closed because of security issues and we were not able to go inside them.

Viator did, however, issue us a refund for the tower portion of the tickets.

It is common for the towers to be closed due to weather or some other issue.

In addition, since this is a Catholic church, discreet clothing is mandatory, and you could be denied entry if what you wear does not meet the requirements.

You will need to cover your shoulders and knees and not wear anything seethrough or revealing.

This tour allows a maximum of 30 people in the group.

The best perk about this tour is that it includes transport between the two attractions so it is quite convenient.

However, hotel pick-up or drop-off is not available.

The downside to the combination tours is that you will probably not be able to wander around and explore on your own, you will have to stick with the tour group.

There is a morning and an afternoon tour, in the winter only a morning one.

If you choose the morning one you get a first-entrance skip-the-line Casa Batlló ticket.

Alternatively, if you choose the afternoon tour you get pre-reserved entrance to Casa Vicens.

Only one Gaudí house is entered – in the morning tour is Casa Batllo and the afternoon one is Casa Vicens. 

Also, you pass by Casa Mila, and get skip-the-line entry to Park Güell and Sagrada Familia.

Even though this is a walking tour, the longer distances between Casa Mila and Casa Vicens, Casa Vicnes and Park Guell as well as between Park Guell and Sagrada Familia are covered by a private minibus.

No lunch, hotel pick up or drop off are included.

I would recommend the morning option as Casa Batllo is busy and seeing it before the crowds arrive would be totally worth it.
