Fun Things To Do In Halifax For Adults

Let’s take a look at the best fun things to do in Halifax for adults.

1. Visit Alexander Keith’s Brewery

Alexander Keith’s Brewery is one of the oldest and most iconic breweries in Canada, located in the heart of Halifax.

It was founded in 1820 by Alexander Keith, a Scottish immigrant who arrived in Halifax in 1817 and was a master brewer with a passion for quality beer.

His brewery quickly gained popularity, and by the mid-1800s, it had become one of the largest in the country.

Keith himself served three terms as the mayor of Halifax, and his contributions to the city’s development and the brewing industry solidified his legacy.

The original brewery, built on Lower Water Street, still stands today. It serves as a heritage site where visitors can step back in time to experience 19th-century brewing methods.

The brewery is best known for its traditional ales, particularly Alexander Keith’s India Pale Ale.

Which has a distinctive malt-forward flavor with a subtle hoppy bitterness.

Over the years, the brewery has expanded its offerings to include various other styles of beer, such as red ales (my favorite), light ales, and seasonal brews.

Today, Alexander Keith’s beer is brewed following a modern process while maintaining the craftsmanship and attention to detail that the brand has been known for since its inception.

Also, the brewery offers guided tours that are totally worth checking out. It was by far my favorite brewery tour I have ever been to.

How long is the Alexander Keith’s Brewery Tour?

The Alexander Keith’s Brewery Tour lasts about one hour. Keep in mind that you can take pictures during the tour but not videos.

During the tour, visitors are guided through the historic brewery, learning about its history, the brewing process, and Alexander Keith’s legacy.

The experience often includes tastings of the brewery’s signature beers, interactive storytelling with costumed guides, and live music.

Guests can explore the original brewery building, including the brewing cellars and the cooperage, where barrels were once made.

Also, the brewery has a gift shop that offers merch and where you can purchase a wide variety of brews that were made on-site.

We absolutely loved this brewery tour and highly recommend it!

5. Explore The Halifax Citadel

The Halifax Citadel, officially known as Fort George, is a large, star-shaped military fortification located on Citadel Hill.

It has its origins in the mid-18th century when Halifax was founded in 1749 as a British military and naval base to secure British interests in the New World.

Over the centuries, four different fortifications were built on the hill, with the current structure being completed in 1856.

It was named after King George II, the monarch at the time of Halifax’s founding.

Why did the British build Halifax Citadel?

The primary function of the Halifax Citadel was to defend Halifax from naval attacks and invasions.

Its strategic location on the hill provided commanding views of the harbor and the surrounding land, making it a vital military outpost.

The fort was heavily armed with cannons and could house hundreds of soldiers.

Though the citadel never faced a direct attack, its presence served as a powerful deterrent.

Also, it played an important role during major conflicts such as the Napoleonic Wars, the American Revolution, and the War of 1812.

In the 20th century, during World War I and World War II, the citadel was used as a signal station. As well as a hub for coordinating defense activities, including anti-aircraft defenses for Halifax.

The current version of the Halifax Citadel was completed in 1856.

In addition, the fort’s walls are lined with gun ports, and artillery pieces once pointed out toward the harbor and land approaches.

6. Old Town Clock

The Old Town Clock, also known as the Halifax Town Clock or Citadel Clock, is one of Halifax’s most iconic landmarks.

Perched on the eastern slope of Citadel Hill, the clock has been a symbol of the city ever since it was commissioned in 1803 by Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, who was stationed in Halifax at the time.

The clock’s prominent position on the hill makes it visible from much of downtown Halifax.

It was intended to promote punctuality among the garrison stationed at the Halifax Citadel.

How old is the Halifax Town Clock?

The clock began operating on October 20, 1803 and has continuously kept time for over two centuries.

The Old Town Clock is housed in a Palladian-style building, a type of architecture known for its symmetry, classical lines, and elegance.

It consists of a three-tiered, octagonal tower that sits atop a white wooden base.

The building’s design is simple yet stately, reflecting the Georgian architectural style popular in Britain at the time of its construction.

The first level is a rectangular structure with windows and a central door, originally designed to serve as the caretaker’s residence.

Above the base is an octagonal second tier, which supports the clock mechanism and features four faces—one on each side of the tower.

These clock faces are large and easily visible from a distance, with Roman numerals indicating the hours.

The uppermost part of the structure consists of a smaller octagonal cupola, topped by a domed roof and a weather vane. This final tier houses the bells that chime the hours.

Also, the bells were designed to be loud enough to be heard across the garrison and throughout downtown Halifax.

What type of clock is the Old Town Clock In Halifax?

The Old Town Clock is a pendulum clock powered by gravity. Originally, the clock required manual winding twice a week to keep it running, a task performed by caretakers over the years.

Over the years, the Old Town Clock has undergone several restorations to maintain its appearance and functionality.

In 1990, the clock was electrified, ensuring that it would continue to run reliably without manual winding.

Despite these modernizations, care has been taken to retain the original character of the clock.
